Alopecia: Going out without a head covering

Botany

Welcome to our second blog post - In today's post I wanted to talk about going outside the comfort of your own home without a wig/head covering - not just for the first time but continuously. This is something I know many people with hair loss would love to be comfortable with, but aren't quite ready... and that's ok! Some of us may never get to the stage of completely braving the bald - I certainly thought that I never would and even now I have, I still have my bad days where I cannot bring myself to leave the house without a covering or bringing a back up in my bag.

Your journey is your own and as long as you feel comfortable and confident, you should feel no pressure to wear a certain cover or any at all. Bald is beautiful, but so is your happiness.

Working towards leaving the house without a wig was a huge goal of mine, I find wigs to be somewhat uncomfortable and they cause me constant anxiety when I wear them in public or at work. Is it wonky? Can people tell? Does it look okay? These were constant worries of mine. The below steps are ones which helped me to finally brave the bald and ditch the wigs!

One step at a time..literally

I started the process of being wig free in public very gradually. I exercised these steps on my walk home from work through a fairly busy part of the City. On day 1, I took my wig off at the top of the stairs leading down to my front door. The next day, I whipped it off and put it into my bag when I was at the end of my road. The day after, two roads, then three... eventually, I walked the whole way without my wig and felt (almost) completely comfortable doing so. There were days whereby I had to take a few steps back if I felt overwhelmed but eventually, I was having days where I was able to leave my wig at home.

If you're still a little uneasy, try doing these steps at night time with a friend or family member. There are usually fewer people around and everything seems calmer at night! You can even wear your head covering to a chosen spot, say, a bench in a park that you like.. once you're there remove your covering for 1 minute.. the next time two.. until you build up the confidence to extend the time and location.

I still take a backup with me most of the time. If I am going out bald, I generally have my hat-with-hair or a beanie with me. Not only does my head get cold but I sometimes have a wobble and want that security there in case I need it. Knowing you can put it on at any time is really reassuring.

If you have any other tips or things that have helped you to brave the bald in public, I'd love to hear them. Head over to my Instagram page or youtube & leave me a comment there - it would be great to hear some more.
